Association for Christian Development - 1959-1969
“ …they were looking for a road.
They wanted to meet the world…. they had heard a talk about work that needed to be done for the Church in Oklahoma. The girls envisioned adventure and went west to volunteer a year of service….”
They found that road. And, it lasted much more than one year.
ACD became a labor of love for Oklahoma and the Catholic Church.
The creation of two college-age young women in the late 1950s, the Association gathered other women to live in community and work as educators and participate fully in the ministry and activities of the Church.
Elizabeth McMahon, Connie Scott, Roxane Rhoades, Charlene Shoemaker, Mary Christie, and many others shared a life together until societal changes, marriages, and the direction of our Church led the women to disband - amicably, happily, and having achieved a unique contribution to the life of our Church that remains extraordinary, even today.
